As a Construction Electrician you will assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in commercial, and industrial settings. You will learn to interpret electrical drawings, follow the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and develop the foundational skills necessary for a successful career as a licensed electrician.
The expectations and level of work at this hourly rate include having a basic understanding of single-phase and three-phase electrical circuitry and experience in lower-level commercial electrical installations, such as the installation of armored cabling (AC90/BX) for branch wiring, some pipe bending experience (EMT), and basic knowledge of rough-in installation for lighting, receptacles, and electrical boxes. This individual should be able to take minor direction and work independently with limited supervision on most low-level installations.
Key Responsibilities
Your role as Construction Electrician will require you to assist experienced electricians on a variety of projects, while actively developing your skills and knowledge of the trade. You will be working closely with Journeymen, Foremen, supporting day-to-day site operations in commercial, and industrial settings. Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- This position is full-time with the requirement of working a minimum of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. In some instances, there may be a requirement to work outside of these hours, and any overtime will be paid as per BC labor laws.
- Read and interpret blueprints, circuit diagrams, and technical drawings to determine electrical layouts for new installations and renovations.
- Install, assemble, and maintain wiring systems, conduits, control panels, circuit breakers, and lighting systems.
- Pull wires through conduits, walls, and floors; splice, connect, and test conductors to fixtures, switches, relays, and distribution panels.
- Install and integrate low-voltage systems such as data, telephone, CCTV, security, and access control cabling.
- Troubleshoot electrical and electronic faults using diagnostic equipment and replace faulty components as required.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical and building systems, including lighting, communication, and HVAC control circuits.
- Conduct testing and inspections to ensure circuits and systems are functioning safely and efficiently.
- Collaborate with site supervisors, technicians, and clients to ensure project specifications and timelines are met.
- Maintain accurate documentation of service records, testing reports, and maintenance activities.
- Adhere strictly to company safety policies and provincial electrical codes.
Requirements
- Completion of a recognized Electrical Apprenticeship Program or an equivalent combination of education and experience in electrical/electronic engineering, construction electrical system, building maintenance, and renovation work.
- 3+ years of relevant experience in construction, maintenance, or electrical systems installation.
- Strong technical understanding of low-voltage, broadcast, or communication systems is considered an asset.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematic drawings.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and electronic issues using testing equipment.
- Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Must be capable of performing physical tasks associated with electrical installation.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record preferred.
Assets and Related Experience (Preferred but Not Required)
- Experience with broadcast or electronic systems installation and calibration.
- Familiarity with CCTV, access control, data cabling, and network wiring systems.
- Background in building maintenance and facility electrical systems.
- Proven record of performing preventive maintenance and maintaining technical documentation.
